Keeping Wildlife at Bay

Wildlife, unchecked, may present hazards to a home or business. Aside from property damage, animals may transmit zoonotic diseases. Do-it-yourselfers trying to locate an animal’s den can suffer accidents from climbing to obscure places and working in narrow spaces. The safety of your home, family, business, employees, customers are crucial. Moving or trapping animals without a professional can be problematic.

Furthermore, in New York State it is illegal for a homeowner to remove wildlife from the property. Homeowners cannot trap and release wildlife into a State park, on State land, or anywhere other than the property it was captured on. Professionals with a Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) or Federal Permit need to be consulted to prevent non-target wildlife, pets, and unsuspecting people from harm. All wildlife, regardless of entrapment, are to be given humane treatment.

Wildlife removal requires Pest Management Professional services, which Full Force Pest Control can provide. Birds

Birds can be beautiful and pleasant in the wild, but they may also cause many problems for home and business owners. Birds can transmit diseases from far distances, creating public health threats. Large populations of birds roosting and nesting in trees, on rooftops, above drop ceilings, and inside chimneys are noisemakers. They’ll get near lights, electrical equipment or into the wiring, and create a fire hazard. Bird nests clog drains, chimney flues and vents. Birds may contaminate facilities where food and equipment are produced. Their droppings and waste damage and corrode the exteriors, creating unsanitary conditions. Droppings on sidewalks make slippery conditions. Insects such as mealworms, mites, and bed bugs can proliferate in these areas.

Contact Full Force Pest Control to develop a bird control system by conducting a thorough inspection, identifying the bird species, and choosing the most effective method of exclusion and control. This may involve installing exclusion devices on areas where birds roost, loaf and nest. All techniques employed are effective and humane.

Squirrels

Family Sciuridae

The preeminent species of tree squirrels in New York City is the Gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). Human expansion forced squirrels to seek new homes out of the trees and woodlands and into buildings, garages and attics. They’ll chew their way indoors and use the space to hoard food and nest. Squirrel infestations are easy to detect. They make a lot of noise nesting in homes and buildings and leave gnaw damage.

Raccoons

Procyon Lotor

Raccoons nest wherever suitable for their dens, such as attics, chimneys, backyards, and underneath porches. Raccoons are family-oriented creatures. After mating from February to March, the females carry their litter – three to five young – for 60 days. At two months, the babies follow their mother to search for food. The family group sticks together for a year. They’ll ruin gardens digging for grubs and earthworms. Humans easily discover raccoon invasions by the scattered messes they leave overnight after raiding through garbage cans for human food leftovers. The blatant signs of an infestation come from structural damages and chewed up fruits and vegetables in the garden. They’ll leave fecal matter and dirt tracks. Raccoon foraging causes a nuisance for both home and business owners. Like bats and skunks, Raccoons can turn rabid and harm humans and their pets. Bats

Order Chiroptera

Bats rarely bother with humans and the rabies virus is not as rampant among them as feared. They’re attracted to outdoor lights and swimming pools where insects tend to fly and gather. Bat infestation is easy to detect in several ways. Bats can be seen flying at dusk and early evening. Bats’ make a lot of noises, they leave dark stains from oil deposits on their fur and their droppings contain insect parts.

Skunk

Family Mephitidae

Skunks ruin vegetable and fruit gardens and mess up lawns while hunting for insects. Skunks dig and burrow beneath homes, foundations, low decks, and buildings with little human activity. Skunks are nocturnal and active in warmer weather. They’ll stay in their dens during extreme cold.

Aside from the danger of transmitting rabies, skunks are notorious for the foul-smelling fluid they expel to ward off predators. At the base of a skunk’s tail are two internal glands which produce a sulphuric, oily liquid. The skunk does a warning dance and raises its tail. Anyone nearby should get away fast. Their fluid can spew up to 20 feet and hit the intended target within 10 feet. A skunk can eject the liquid multiple times. If their fluid splashes in a human or animal’s eyes, they may suffer temporary blindness. Call Full Force wildlife removal, and we’ll be there in two hours or less!

Opossum

Didelphis virginiana

Opossums are nocturnal marsupials that reproduce one to two litters a year with seven to 13 offspring in each. Opossums build their homes inside garages, under buildings or houses, hollowed logs and burrows. They tend to damage lawns and gardens digging for grubs. Opossums are inert and produce an offensive odor. They will eat anything they can find – mammals, insects, birds, grass, fish, fruits and carrion.

The phrase “playing possum” was coined because of the opossum’s nervous shock reaction. Their heartbeat slows, and they’ll go limp, roll over and hang their tongue out. They know to snap out of it fast and escape predators. But they can only run seven miles per hour. because of their slowness, opossums developed tricks to elude enemies – they’ll jump into burrows or climb trees, hiss, bare teeth, and release a foul green fluid from their anal glands to drive away predators.

Opossums are a protected species of wildlife, so extreme care must be taken in their removal. Full Force Pest Control will comply with local laws and humanely remove them from your property.
